Some of Soap Disadvantages
Soap is one of types of surface-active agents – surfactant. It acts through making fat and oil water-dissolved and with no trouble removed by washing. Soap is made from fatty acid salts and it cleans by reducing the surface tension of your skin with anionic agents such as carboxynate, sulfonate and sulfate ions which are would-be irritants.
Recently it was thought that soaps cause irritation only because they remove fat from the skin layers. However, the new research has shown that soaps also affect both the fat and protein composition of the skin top layer.
This also causes difficult skin reactions and lead to rougher skin texture. Soaps also emulsify dirt and oil by nature alkaline and therefore raise the skin’s acidic PH as well as provoke puffiness of the skin surface.
This can increase amount of bacteria on the skin while puffiness can cause cellular damage. Soaps also eradicate natural moisturizing factors and disturb the skin’s protective barrier. The fatty acids in soaps can be also harmful – they plunge the skin pores and cause acne. Some soaps contain perfume (to mask the strong odors of surfactants) and sometimes dyes or pigments. For people who have sensitive skin, these ingredients can be irritating.
